The Radford Genealogical Inventory of Early Brethren Assemblies

The Radford Genealogical Inventory of Early Brethren Assemblies

Compiled by Dwight A. Radford

This compilation is an extension of the author’s article in the April 2011 issue of The Septs.  It lists where the Open Brethren assemblies (congregations) met in 1897 and where the Exclusive (non-open) Brethren met in 1873, based on information from the respective groups and years.  The author added the Civil Parish information. The author has placed sub-denominations (placenames within a townland) in their appropriate civil parish.

For further information on Irish Brethren assemblies, read the article “The Irish Plymouth Brethren” in The Septs, April 2011.

Using this inventory

Researchers may benefit from using this inventory with the 1901 and 1911 Irish censuses to identify potential Brethren families and assemblies within a small geographic area.  Since the Brethren are hostile towards denominationalism, their religious identities are obscured in the census reports.  They may have identified themselves as Christian, Christian Brethren, Brethren, Plymouth Brethren, undenominational Christian Protestant, Exclusive Brethren, Open Brethren – even as “no religious denomination.”  Comparing such families to this inventory may be a lead for Irish family historians.
