Irish storytelling creates narrative bridges from the past through the present to the future.

Keeping the Irish Oral Storytelling Tradition Alive

An introduction to Irish Wonder tales, Mythological Gods & Giants, Warriors, Warrior Queens and an earlier genealogy of the fairy folk or little people.

David Zander

What tales did your Irish ancestors know? What are two major ways through which Irish stories survived? Which stories have passed down for over two millennium? Come learn about these and other entertaining insights from the ancient origins of Irish fairytales. David will guide us on a path deeper into the mists of Irish folklore. He will share a few of his favorite stories, introduce some of the characters he has met along the way, including a traditional storyteller recorded by folklorists in the 1930's.

David Zander was born in London, trained at the University of London as a teacher, and taught in England, Kenya and the Bahamas before coming to Minnesota. He is a graduate of the anthropology and education program at the University of Minnesota. An interest in storytelling is a common theme or thread that weaves in and around all the aspects of his professional life. This year will be his third year as a storyteller in the Lore and More Tent at the Irish Festival in Saint Paul.
