Instructor Biographies

Linda Miller, is the owner of Retrospective Memoirs, and Jean Travis, a Creative Memories consultant, are personal historians. They teach workshops on writing personal and family stories, photo-journaling, heritage albums and on writing ethical wills (a letter to your loved ones in which you pass on your values, your beliefs, feelings, advice, parting words, etc., an ancient Jewish tradition that has become of great interest to others of all faiths).

Beth Mullinax, is the Librarian for the Irish Genealogical Society International. Since it's inception, Beth has held almost every position on IGSI's Board of Directors, including past president. As Librarian, she has been instrumental in building the Irish research collection housed at the Minnesota Genealogical Society library, as one of the largest collections of Irish research materials in North America. A genealogy researcher since 1981, she has lead four research trips to Ireland and is a sought after genealogy speaker in the U.S. and Canada.

Beth Vought,has been doing Irish genealogical research since 1997 when she discovered she was Irish. Since then, she has used a variety of sources to successfully track down where her ancestors lived in Ireland prior to their 1847 emigration to America. Since moving to Wisconsin from Michigan, she has been actively involved in the Irish Genealogical Society International as co-editor and interim editor of The Septs, writing articles, and teaching a variety of classes on specific resources pertaining to Irish genealogy. She volunteers at IGSI Irish Saturdays, helping answer people's questions about their Irish research. Beth has recently been to County Monaghan, Ireland where she spent time with some local, well known historians in addition to pursuing permissions for copies of Presbyterian church microfilms.

Tom Rice, CG, is a certified professional genealogist offering research, consulting and instructional services focusing on the Upper Midwest, Ireland and Scotland. He is a Director of the Minnesota Genealogy Society and past officer and current chair of the Publications Committee for the Irish Genealogy Society International, and Managing Editor of The Septs. He lectures frequently for genealogy groups in Minnesota and Wisconsin, and is a volunteer for the Minnesota Historical Society.

Brigid Shields, is a reference Librarian at the Minnesota Historical Society Library. She has extensive experience in genealogy and family history research. She has a M. A. in Library Science from the University of Minnesota and has been a guest lecturer at various historical and genealogical conferences.

Duane P. Swanson, government records specialist with the Minnesota Historical Society's Division of Library, Publications and Collections, holds a dual position in the Reference and Collections Management departments. A native of Minnesota with degrees from Hamline University and the University of Delaware, Duane lectures throughout Minnesota on government records and genealogical topics.

Cathi Weber, is President of the Anoka County Genealogical Society, where she also volunteers as their newsletter editor. With over 20 years of research experience, she has visited various libraries and repositories in Missouri, Virginia, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Iowa, Salt Lake City, Arizona, and Minnesota. Also experienced with Internet research, she is the author and co-editor of five family histories.

Mary Wickersham, has over 34 years experience with computer technology. In her 24 years with The Federal Reserve, and 3 years with U.S. Bank she held many roles in computer programming and architecture. After her "retirement", Mary invested her time in volunteer work and studying website design. Through her business Wickersham Sites, she develops and supports websites for small businesses and non-profit societies. She is also co-owner of Midwest Ancestor Research, a web-based genealogical research firm. Mary is past secretary of the Irish Genealogical Society International, and will end her term as Treasurer of the Minnesota Genealogical Society in September 2007.

Roberta Palen, volunteers at the IRRC. She is a member of the Range Genealogical Society and researches her ancestors who lived in Finland and on the Iron Range.

Harold E. Hinds, Jr., Ph.D,Diatinguished Research Professor of History, University of Minnesota, Morris. He is an associate editor f the Minnesota Genealogist, a columost of NGS News Magazine, and author or editor of 25 genealogical or hisrorical books.

J.H. Fonkert, Specializes in Midwest and Dutch genealogy. He lectures on 19th century Midwest genealogy, the use of maps in genealogy and immigration. He is a director of the Minnesota Genealogical Society and is a member of the National Genealogical Society and the Association of Professional Genealogists.

Mike Puckett, Family History hobbyist for over 30 years with main interest in New England, southern US and England. Specialist in English Research. Member of the New England Historical Genealogical Society (NEHGS) and National Genealogical Society (NGS). Has published in the Regisher of the New England Historical Genealogical Society.
