Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is there a limit on the number of ancestors my chart can have?
We aren't aware of a limit. We recently added one chart that has thousands of entries.

  • Will the pedigree charts be visible to everyone on the internet or just to IGSI members?
Anyone will be able to see them if they know where to look. We will not be tag these for easy access by search engines and we will only be announcing where to locate them through our members site and member emails.

  • How do I make a GEDCOM file?
The exact steps needed to create a GEDCOM file will vary slightly depending on the software package you are using. In many cases it is no harder than saving your information. You will have access to your pedigree chart and be able to add or change anything on your chart.

  • Can I request that you deleteÊmy chart at sometime in the future?
    Yes.

  • How will I know if all the information in the charts you post is correct?
You won't . Just as in other pedigree programs such as Ancestry.com, you can never be sure if the information listed is correct. The sources listed will provide clues but you should always verify all information obtained from others.

  • How long will my chart remain on the IGSI site? What if my membership lapses?
Your chart will remain up. We hope you do not let your membership lapse but it will remain on our site because your chart could be helpful to others

  • What can be done if I find my ancestors on someone else's chart and the information is not correct? Can I request that you take that file off the website?
This can always be a problem but IGSI will not change someone else's chart. We suggest that you contact the person whose chart might be wrong but should that be fruitless it will stand as presented. We suggest that you put a correct GEDCOM chart up so that the information you choose to share will balance the one you feel is wrong.
